    Class of 2008 Graduated On June 19th

    The Loudoun Valley Senior Class Graduated on Thursday, June 19th, at Leonard Stadium on the school’s campus. There were 480 Graduates.
    Principal Sue Ross praised the graduates for their contributions to their school and their community. She noted the class’s giving of their time and energy to supporting area charities and people in need of “a helping hand”. Ross also commended the Class of 2008 for raising the bar of expectations for subsequent classes because of their deeds and accomplishments. She called on the graduates to continue to engage life and look for opportunities to grow.

    Dr. Sam Adamo, LCPS director of planning and legislative services, suggested the graduates rely on their imaginations to fulfill their future. “Use your imagination to explore your life and apply it to those around you, it will guarantee you rewards that will transcend money and success.”

    Loudoun Valley Assistant Principal Vicki Dorsey Holstead said the 480 graduates in the Class of 2008 represented the school’s largest graduating class to date. She also noted the following statistics:

    • 81 percent will pursue post-secondary education;

    • 2 percent will join the military;

    • 17 percent will seek employment or pursue other endeavors;

    • The class earned more than $1.7 million dollars in scholarships and grants;

    • 241 students graduated with the Governor’s Seal;

    • 276 students (57 percent) have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better;

    • 32 achieved a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or better.
    Loudoun Launches Prescription Drug Discount Card for County Residents

    Loudoun County has launched a discount card program to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The county is making free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs. The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, and are accepted at many of the county’s pharmacies. A national network of more than 59,000 participating retail pharmacies also will honor the NACo prescription discount card.

    The NACo prescription discount card offers significant savings for the uninsured and underinsured residents of Loudoun, and even those fortunate to have prescription coverage can use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plan. Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program. There is no cost to county taxpayers for NACo and Loudoun to make these money-saving cards available to residents.

    A list of places where cards are available is online at www.loudoun.gov/prescriptiondiscountcards. County residents can call toll free 1-877-321-2652 or visit www.caremark.com/naco for assistance with the program.Using the NACo prescription discount card is easy. Simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance. The discount card program is administered by Caremark Rx, Inc.
    Landfill Will have New Entrance May 27

    The Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility will be closed on Monday, May 26, 2008, for Memorial Day. The landfill will re-open on Tuesday May 27, 2008, at 8:00 a.m. with a new entrance on Evergreen Mills Road, slightly south of the existing entrance.

    Once you have entered the landfill, watch the signs for directions because there will be changes to the internal roads also. The recycling center will be one-way with a separate entrance and exit. If you have garbage to dispose of which requires a trip over the landfill scales, you are strongly encouraged to “Recycle First,” then “Weigh In.”

    The normal operating hours at the Loudoun County landfill are Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm. The landfill is located at 20939 Evergreen Mills Road (Route 621) and the new entrance is approximately 4.5 miles south of Leesburg. A map of the new entrance is available on the county website at www.loudoun.gov/landfill. The disposal fee at the landfill is $60.00 per ton, with additional charges for tires and refrigerated appliances. The landfill accepts cash or checks only.

    Free mulch is available at the landfill before you enter the Recycling Center. Saturday’s popular Fast Trash program will continue with a new traffic pattern. Watch for signs at the landfill.
    Planning for College, It is never too early

    Recent research and studies have found that students are waiting until too late to start looking at colleges.Too often, graduating High School students find themselves behind the curve when it comes to college selection. Rising GPA's and SAT Scores have served to make Colleges more competitive than ever. High School students should start considering college admission requirements almost as soon as they enter High School. Some colleges require AP courses in order to enter various schools of study, and others require completion of certain course levels. There are minimum GPA and SAT requirements. If a High School student is not careful, they could find themselves off the necessary curriculum path required to reach the prerequisite courses of their college of choice.

    The point at which attending college moves from a conceptual thought to a pending reality often occurs when the student starts doing research on the colleges themselves. Visiting the prospective college campus is highly recommended. Altogether, selecting and being accepted to a college can often be quite an ordeal.

    One source that has proved invaluable to many college bound students is online at: www.princetonreview.com . This site offers free registration, and rates the colleges, offers attending student comments, and statistical reports on admission requirements as well as student life. This site also offers the 'Best of', and the 'Worst of' in hundreds of categories. Find out which college ranks 1st in the "DORMS LIKE DUNGEONS" category.

    A second online reference for colleges is: www.collegeboard.com. This site is brought to you by the SAT organization, and here you can register for the SAT's, get your scores, send them to colleges, and get facts about those colleges as well. Both websites offer search engines based on student preferences, and are free for students to use.
    Rains bring Mosquitoes

    Several different species of mosquitoes may be a threat for spreading West Nile virus in Virginia. Two species of concern are the Northern House mosquito (Culex pipiens) and the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus). The Northern House mosquito feeds mostly on birds but will also bite people. This type of mosquito breeds in polluted water and artificial containers often found near homes or in urban settings. They enter homes and feed at night in the dark when people are sleeping. The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) breeds in containers, bites both birds and people and can be found around and inside the home. The Asian tiger mosquito, which bites during the daytime, also is very common in Virginia.

    Residents can reduce their chance of contracting West Nile virus by reducing breeding grounds around their homes. People can prevent mosquitoes from breeding by turning over or removing containers around the home where water collects, such as old tires, potted plant trays, buckets, and toys. People also should clean birdbaths and wading pools once a week, clean roof gutters and downspout screens regularly, and eliminate standing water on flat roofs.

    Other recommendations to reduce exposure to mosquitoes:
    • Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing.

    • Use insect repellent products with no more than 35 percent DEET for adults and less than 10 percent for children. Follow instructions when using insect repellents. Get a Fact Sheet on DEET.

    • Turn over or remove containers in your yard where water collects, such as old tires, potted plant trays, buckets and toys.

    • Eliminate standing water on tarps or flat roofs.

    • Clean out birdbaths and wading pools once a week.

    • Clean roof gutters and downspout screens regularly.

    • Residents may purchase larvicide to treat standing water if it is on their own personal property.

    Pamphlets on steps you can take to protect yourself from West Nile virus are available at the Health Department and at each of the Loudoun County libraries. These can also be accessed from the Virginia Department of Health website.
