By now everyone should have tried their hand at making pickles.  They are quite easy to make.
We have had good harvests of cucumbers and squash, and just as the peppers were taking off a deer got past my fence and snacked on the tops.  They are growing out again, but they have a long way to go.

The heat has been brutal, and my switch to the soaker hoses has proven a real good thing.  I will probably use this method again next year.  Still with the raised beds, the drainage is so good, that this real hot heat is drying out my boxes.  The tomatoes are good this year for us, and we have enjoyed a flavorful crop.

Hope everyone has had a good year of gardening, it is not over yet, but we have started the price comparison.

Cost for gardening supplies and seed, etc.
$75.00
cost for canning supplies
$25.00
Total cost
$100.00

compared to buying from store
Tomatoes  50 pounds at an average of 1.50 a pound

$75.00
cucumbers 40 pounds at at average of 1.00 a pound
$40.00
Squash same as cucumbers
$40.00

Peppers, we grow the cubanelles
We like them for cooking better,  figure a 1.00 a pepper on the average.
we have a good solid.

$75.00
This gives us a total of an estimated $230.00 or a food savings of 130.00 so far .
Not a great year, but  these fresh veggies sure taste better than you can get at the store.
Plus some good things canned for later. Grin Grin Grin
