Rescued: Dogs left tied to a tree get a second chance

Next time, atleast leave water please.

These three dogs were really lucky. They were left for dead in the Santa Fe National Forest (New Mexico) tied to a tree, according to a story by the Associated Press.

Pennsylvania campers Heather Diehl and Jay Ball stumbled upon the dogs while out hiking with their own two dogs late last month, said Natalie Owings of Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary, who helped find the dogs a safe haven in Colorado.

One dog broke free from his tether, but refused to leave, Owings said. He stayed around his buddies in the isolated area.

The couple freed the friendly dogs and took them into town for veterinary help after contacting Owings. They were treated for dehydration and ear infections. All three dogs were in relatively good health.

Chris Nelson, director of animal services at the Durango animal shelter, said all three shepherd mixes were still available for adoption. The dogs passed their behavior tests, are healthy, and are just waiting for the right fit.

Who does this to three dogs? This couple also found a dog running loose in Great Smoky Mountain National Park and rescued it.

Miraculously, a golden retriever named Lulu survived a 25-metre fall uninjured after being swept over Elk Falls in Campbell River, B.C., on Friday.

"That's the first thing I've ever heard of going over the falls and surviving," Campbell River Search & Rescue manager Grant Cromer told ctvbc.ca.

Reunions: Lost Dog Missing for Five Years Returned to Family

Five years after he disappeared without a trace, a San Diego dog has found his way home.

Scott Alix lost his dog five years ago and always hoped to find Mikey Brown, his terrier mix, one day. That day came last month when he received a call from the San Diego Humane Society telling him that his dog had been located.

Alix said he’s not sure how Mikey Brown lost his way, but does remember his pooch taking off to get hotdogs from a nearby deli.

“One day someone intercepted him, and he never came back,” said Alix.

The terrier mix wasn’t alone for long. According to Alix, he was cared for by a woman for the past five years. She recently died, and thanks to the microchip implanted in his dog, Alex and Mikey Brown were finally reunited.

Alix and his two sons have welcomed Mikey Brown back into their Mission Hills home with open arms. “He was my first son. I had him before I had my two sons,” Alix said.

Dog Food Recall Raises the Question About Dog Food Quality Overall

"Several dog and cat dry pet foods under the Iams or Eukanuba brands are being voluntarily recalled by The Procter & Gamble Company “as a precautionary measure because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. No salmonella-related illnesses have been reported,” say company representatives, “but some products made at a single, specialized facility have the potential for salmonella contamination and as a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made at this facility.”

Don't store your dry dog food in a hot and/or humid location...nor in vicinity of heat source (winter-time).  Heat does a number on dry dog food.  Breaks down the good stuff and contributes to growth of the bad stuff.  We buy small bags of dry food so we can refrigerate it.

Neighbors rally to help canine hero.

http://www.abcactionnews.com/dpp/lifestyle/pets/heroic-wash.-dog-rescues-child%3B-community-saves-blazer

Byline: Brynn Grimley; Kitsap Sun

A beloved border collie who tracked down a missing child became a neighborhood hero.

Now Kitsap County folks are returning the favor by covering a $3,000 medical bill to amputate Blazer's hind leg after he was discovered tied up with plastic wire.

Blazer disappeared from the Roller family's home Aug. 5. The 7-year-old border collie was found early this week near a school with plastic wire zip ties around three of his four legs just above his paws.

"They said if he would have stayed outside one more night, he would have died," said David Roller. "There was no way he could have made it home."

The family said it clear the injuries were caused by humans. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever abused Blazer.

"The really special thing about Blazer is his favorite game is search and rescue," said Katie Roller, David's wife.

That training came in handy recently when a neighbor's child got lost in the woods near their home. Katie Roller sent Blazer out and he found the child.

Blazer vanished the same day Katie Roller was in a serious car accident, leaving the family to wonder if he was trying to find her when she didn't come home.

Her car was totaled and she was hospitalized with a severed artery in her leg. Her leg was almost amputated, and it could still be if it doesn't heal properly, she said.

The Roller family is struggling financially so the vet bill hit them hard.

"We've never asked anybody for help, but we decided we needed to tell people someone mutilated our dog and we need help,"she said.

"He's just a really beloved animal in our whole neighborhood," Katie Roller said.
